Keep Senator Feingold

US Senator Russell D Feingold has served the people of Wisconsin since 1983: first in the State Senate for ten years, then as US Senator since 1993. He has been a thoughtful and independent voice in both legislative bodies, and has earned re-election next week.

I do not agree with every position or vote he has taken, maybe no one does. For example, the Senator opposed the Clinton-era free-trade agreements, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which I think were basically good. But he has been right more than wrong:

USAPATRIOT Act: Feingold voted against this major intrusion of Big Government into the lives of Americans, and it was passed over his objections. Later many members of Congress recognized its faults.

Iraq: Feingold was always against this war, and today we know that it was sold to the nation on false pretenses (remember Sadam's WMD?). With American troops on the way out, the new Iraqi government is turning to Iran for guidance and political support. How many American lives was that worth?

Campaign Finance: Feingold joined with Republican Senator John McCain to draft a bill limiting and regulating spending in federal elections, which was signed into law by President George W Bush. Some provisions have been ruled unconstitutional, but I contend it was a worthy bi-partisan effort to deal with the problem of buying political influence, which is as serious as ever now.

Congressional Ethics: Feingold sponsored the toughest restrictions ever on the acceptance of gifts (even free meals) by members of Congress.

Wasteful Spending: He is now working with Rep. Paul Ryan (R, Wisconsin) to craft a presidential line-item veto. (1)

Healthcare Reform: Feingold voted for this bill that regulated, but did not take-over, the health-insurance business. He is proud of his vote, and so am I.

The Republican nominee, Ron Johnson, is making his first try for public office, so he has no record of public service to evaluate. His campaign statements indicate that he is highly partisan (2) and has only superficial knowledge of the workings of the federal government.(3) He has spoken of cutting "billions of dollars" from the federal budget (1), but won't say what he wants to cut. He believes that the Obama Healthcare bill was a federal takeover, but the final bill did not even include a "public option".

If Johnson were elected, it is hard to imagine him partnering with a Democratic senator to craft legislation, something he has never done at all. He should stick to plastics.

(2) Johnson told a Tea Party rally that he would have gladly given President George W Bush the enhanced presidential powers in the USAPATRIOT Act, but did not want Obama to have them.

(3) Johnson claimed that the money in the Social Security Trust Fund was "gone", while in reality it is guaranteed by federal bonds, the world's safest interest-bearing investment.

Feingold is one of the most liberal senators in Congress, so if you lie that as does Mr Glazer, then Feingold is your guy.

1. USA Patriot Act: I doubt any reader of this blog can name one provision of this act. Not that the readers are ignorant, but that the provisions of the this have almost no effect on any citizen of the USA. And I doubt any reader has been affected by the act at all.

In addition it is quite revealing that Mr Glazer considers an act that directly affects almost no citizen of the USA an example of Big Government, yet he likes Obamacare which will change everything for everyone in the USA. Obamacare is the ultimate of Big Government, yet Mr Glazer likes it. Obamacare is such a great example of true Big Government, that there are many laws suits being brought by states on the basis that Obamacare is unconstitutional as it exceeds the role of the Federal Government as it requires people to buy something they may not want. This is TRUE Big Government, yet Mr Glazer supports it. Therefore , Mr Glazer could not truly be opposed to the USA Patriot Act because it represents Big Government.

The USA Patriot Act does what is the primary role of government, i.e. protection and security of the country. Obamacare, on the other hand, is the intrusion of the government into the market place and thus represents a step in the direction of Marxism.

2. Iraq - Saddam Hussien did the following:
a. Murdered 400,000 Iraqi's and their bodies were found in mass graves shot in the back of the head.
b. Started a war that resulted in the death of over 1,000,000 people.
c. Used WMD's against the Kurds killing thousands.
d. Paid the family of terrorists who murdered Israelis $25,000.
e. Harbored terrorists in his country who killed USA citizens and Israelis: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1097948/posts
f. Broke 18 UN resolutions, some of which were the provisions of the end of Gulf War I, therefore, legally he had restarted Gulf War I.
f. Attacked and occupied Kuwait
g. Attacked Israel killing dozens by scud missiles
h. Attacked Said Arabia by scud missile
i. Was weeks away from having a nuclear reactor to create fissionable material for a nuclear bomb, but it was destroyed by Israel. However, Saddam never gave up the desire or capability to produce nuclear weapons and he would have if UN inspectors left Iraq and many countries wre pushing to have UN inspectors removed before we attacked Iraq.
j. Had two sons who were worse than him and this would have guaranteed his regime would have continues for 30-40 more years.

So Feingold saw nothing wrong with leaving in power the most violent despot and biggest mass murderer in the world since Pol Pot; and Mr Glazer agrees.

3. The McCain-Feingold campaign finance bill has been found to either illegal or ineffective. If you think it is effective then you have not been paying attention to the current election.

4. Indeed Mr Feingold is one of the most ethical senators in Congress

5. Wasteful spending. Mr Feingold has been in office for many years. It should be fully understood that the president has no role in making laws or spending money. These are functions controlled by Congress of which Feingold is a member. Thus the economic situation we are in today on his shoulders. Mr Feingold is a liberal , liberal love to spend other people's money, and Feingold has been one the most liberal of senators.

6. Obamacare - I would bet that every reader of this blog knows someone whose health insurance has gone up significantly ($1000/year or more) over the past few weeks. No congressman including Feingold has read the Obamacare bill and everything we were told about Obamacare is turning out to be a lie, e.g. we can keep our insurance, our rates will go down not up, etc.

It is true that we were told that Obamacare will regulate and not take over the Health insurance industry but this is turning out to be a lie. The regulations are making it impossible for the insurance companies to make any money, therefore, they must raise fees or closing down. People will not be able to pay these high fees and will go toi government health insurance, which will kill the health insurance industry and thus Obamacare will result in the government take-over of health insurance.

Ron Johnson is a self-made successful businessman who has actually created jobs, Feingold is a lawyer who has never been in an executive position and has no idea how to create jobs. Today we are in no need of a lawyer. We need someone who has created jobs and who knows how to created jobs.

Mr Glazer seems to be clairvoyant as he seems to know that Ron Johnson will not work with Democrats. First of all, there is no great value in working with the opposition. The McCain-Feingold Bill was a complete disaster as described above.

The issue is not whether our senator will work with the other side, the issue is how can we get the USA back to its former position in the world as an economic dynamo, as a Democratic Republic according to the Constitution of the USA, and as a beacon of freedom and opportunity in the world. The only way to do this is to rid the Congress of its Marxist self destructive tendencies which are endemic in the liberal Democrats, e.g. Feingold, in Congress.
